My Therapeutic Approach
Over the years I have studied many different therapeutic modalities and while they all have some element of utility, I’ve found several uniquely useful. My approach, which I call Somatic Materialist Therapy is a synthesis of Somatic Experiencing and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy underscored by the premise that the material world influences human behavior continuously. Somatic Experiencing presupposes that traumas and negative emotions are stored in the body as inflammation until they are consciously released while Dialectical Behavioral Therapy focuses on managing emotions and coping with stress by holding paradoxical thoughts to be true, even in their contradiction. These modalities tend to work for most patients as long as their material needs are met - those of stable food, water, shelter, friendship, physical health, romance, safety, and income. Without these base line needs met, its impossible to work on the mind as the two are intrinsically linked.
The entire picture must be dealt with and no stone unturned - Are you taking care of your physical fitness? How is your sleep hygiene? Are you regulating you screen time? Have you asserted boundaries with that rambunctious friend? We will answer these questions and more together before exploring the deeper roots of the challenges you face.
